As much as I enjoy driving the super, it was a pleasure not having to think about a days drive ahead. Although waking at 5:30 to wash a car in the cold, damp darkness was not fun. Concorso Italiano was set for today (http://concorso.com/). It’s claimed to be the largest gathering of Italian cars in America. Having been fortunate enough to participate several major Italian car events in Europe, afforded me ability to notice a stark difference with this concorso. Here at the Laguna Seca Golf Ranch new, mega-priced, super cars were given prominence. The greens turned red with brand-new Ferraris, Lambos and Maseratis. There were some very nice vintage models mixed in to the large gathering as well. Since we are still waiting for the return of Alfa Romeo, only vintage was on display in the Alfa section. Deep into the back corner were placed FIAT. To me, this section was the most interesting as the variety of models were far more diverse than the endless sea of sameness in the Lambo and Ferrari section.
The local Alfa Romeo club had a special display area and we were greeted by some surprise when they saw our New York license plate. We were parked at the far end of the section with the information that we would be the anchor of the sedan section. After the final Alfa was parked, we felt set adrift as we were now parked quite deep into the Fiat section next to an Alfasud. Our “land of misfit toys” did manage to attract many knowledgeable people who came over to talk to us about our trip out west and comment on how much they thought the Giulia was one of the best Alfas ever made. I did not disagree. After the show we had a great dinner with the members of ARA (Alfa Romeo Association) who made us feel very welcomed.
