Waking to the sound of slot machines we left the Red Garter hotel/casino as fast as possible and headed to back to the salt flats. The storm that tore through here hours ago and took most of the tents with it leaving only the heavy objects behind scattered around the deep muddy camping area. Entering the salt flats required a drive through a river of salty water, not something I was not willing to do with the super. The weather was perfect; bright sun, no humidity and a cool breeze. The past nights rain did little to dampen the excited mood among the speed-freaks. This collection of crazed hot-rodders spend the entire year waiting for this week on the salt. This event is unlike any other auto event; equal parts car show, party, and high speed race – this is burning man for gear-heads. The rodders are a very friendly bunch; sunburned and bleary eyed with the smell of exhaust and motor oil in their overgrown beards and vintage t-shirts. This crunch white packed track is heaven to them and they are eager to tell you why.
