Fiat Dino Restoration – Convertible Top and Interior work

August 12 2007
The convertible top was probably not original but it sure looked fairly old. Its a very complicated top to install so there is little wonder it was not replaced more often.  It is made up of two sections. They are joined at a wooden bow where the two halves are tacked together to the wood.  It is very difficult to get the rear window to smooth out and the metal mechanism is also quite complex. These photos are to document the removal old top so the replacement installation can be replicated.

The interior was also quite warn and the under carpet/vinyl insulation was most definitely original.  It is possible the carpet was original due to its pattern and the amount of wear. Some registration paperwork was found under the seat and the Milan license plate was found in the trunk.  Once the arduous task of removing the floor insulation padding (made from horse hair and tar) the metal floors were exposed. Surface rust was present but the floors were solid. They were sanded, the rust treated and POR15 applied with a top coat of semi gloss black. Modern insulation was placed on the floors without glue so not to trap moisture.
